A recent Supreme Court decision expanded federal enforcement authority in ways that will significantly affect families in Southern California. Supporters describe it as a law-and-order approach. Many families experience it as fear and uncertainty.

I have met parents who leave for work unsure if they will return home. Children who arrive at school worried their parents may not be there when they get back. Workers who face wage theft and unsafe conditions because reporting abuses might put their families at risk. This is not safety. It is vulnerability. Immigration is often discussed as a political concept instead of as a human reality. Immigrant families contribute to our communities. They work in essential jobs. They raise children who are part of our shared future. They bring culture, labor, and stability to California.

California must continue to protect families through due process, accountability, and policies that prevent exploitation. We must ensure that enforcement does not become a tool for fear. We also must hold abusive employers accountable when they take advantage of vulnerable workers.

Meaningful reform requires fairness and humanity. Strong communities are built when families stay together, not when they live in fear of being separated.
